That happens to me every few weeks. The old error message hangs around for a few games or days and eventually disappears. I've never figured out why.

Every game I look at, I see the error "You must select either Master or Mondo when submitting a new koan." This happens even if I look at a game I'm not playing. . . or a game that isn't Zendo. The site is still completely functional, but this is annoying.

Edit: Oh, and now that I realize that it's still my turn in a Zendo game where I indeed forgot to specify Master or Mondo, and fix that, the error no longer appears. Huh. Maybe it's useful.

True. And I'm not the most frequent logger-onner in the world.

Not sure what the "Set Guessing Mode" does, but even if it doesn't prove useful, we could just give everyone 100 guessing stones to start with and instruct everyone to submit empty koans in order to move on to guessing time. The master could then delete the empty koans when uploading a counterexample. It would be a bit cumbersome, but I'm willing to try if anyone is interested.

Cumbersome indeed. You still have to wait for the Master to log in and mark your blank koan before you can guess. Still, it's better than nothing.

Not to worry. I've seen some unbelievably long drop-down lists in SDG. It seems to handle it no problem. I will definitely check out that article when I have a bit of free time. Thanks for the link!

I used to have the problem, but after years of playing here on SDG, I find that I now have the opposite problem! Now I find over-the-board games to be very fast-paced and can only superficially think about my moves, whereas I can take my time and think things through much better on SDG. I think it just boils down to what your brain is used to. I hope you start to feel that way, too, because we'd hate to lose your company here online!

Hello,

The top of the archived games page says:

"Games Archive (289 total)"

This is _exactly_ the (current) number of games in progress according to the front page, and there are certainly more than 289 games in the archive. This number should reflect the number of games in the archive, not the number of games in progress.

I think the mind is organizing what is coming from outside in 3D. He work better if the outside informations are already in 3 dimensions. Now if the info is in 2D, like it is, for example, in an online game, the mind try to make a false 3D of it and so ,need more time to decide what to do. Since the opponent (if it is not a computer) have the same problem, the winner is the player who have a better understanding of the game ...and think faster.

Subject: Thinking in a game -- Over the Board vs SDG
Topic Replies: 2

This evening I've been thinking about abstract gaming and abstract gaming online. What got me thinking was a particularly thorny situation in a game that required a great deal of thought -- thought that I couldn't muster while staring at my computer.I think that when I play a game over the board, I can read deeper and more consistently. I'm curious why this might be. My first guess is that while I play, I get used to reading that particular game and I develop mental models of the game that get updated during that game. I don't seem to do this when I play online. At best I can look at a few variations in my head before I give up and play a move.

I feel like if I wanted to succeed in each round I play online, I would need to lay out the physical pieces or slowly replay the moves a number of times before ultimately deciding on a move. This seems a little baroque.

Has anyone else thought about this before? Does anyone else feel like online gaming pales in comparison to over the board gaming for this reason? How do you compensate for it?
